5 Steps To Take Before You Move Into Your Dream House

4013535226_8291eee35e_z.jpgYou finally did it - you bought the perfect house! The size is right, the neighbourhood is idyllic and it’s just the right distance from town. You are now overwhelmed with thoughts of how the actual move will go and where would be the best place for your enormous new wardrobe. However, there are a few steps to consider before you start packing you probably forgot about while daydreaming of your new cosy nest.

1. Make Sure Everyone Knows You’ll Move

Of course, most of your family and friends know all about your huge new purchase by now. However, there a probably a few institutions and companies you’d want to inform about the move as well. Such as your bank or…etc. You do not wish any confidential information about your finances to get to the next tenants of your former residence. Also, you should set the record straight with any utility companies and other bills and subscriptions you receive in your name. You don’t want any mix-ups that might cost you in the end.

2. Decide What You Will Take With You

You probably cannot wait to decorate your new home and make it cosy and comfortable. But first you should decide what pieces of your furniture and belongings you would like to bring to the new house and how much you will invest in new buys. Now is the right time to de-clutter. Throw out anything that is unusable and give or sell all items that you simply don’t need anymore. That will make your move easier and probably cheaper, and will also open some space for your new purchases that you actually need.

3. Prepare Your New Home For The Move

To ensure a smooth move to your new residence you have to be certain all the major repairs (if any are needed) and re-decorations are done. It would be much easier and less messy to paint the walls and change the floors, or deal with any plumbing and electricity issues before you actually move in. Ideally, you want the house to be perfectly clean and ready for you to spread your furniture and possessions all over the place.

4. Organize The Move

Now that you have decided what you’re taking to your new home, it’s time to pack. This is an overwhelming task, so it’s best to start by making a schedule. Put your belongings in boxes and suitcases. Decide what items you’ll need till the last day in your old house (like essential toiletries and basic kitchenware) and leave them for last. Carefully group your belongings and label all of the boxes. Indicate which ones have fragile objects in. Think of how you’ll transport your furniture to the new house, and how many back-and-forth tours will be needed. Consider asking friends for help, or hiring professional man with a van to do the job.

5. Research The Neighbourhood

By now you are probably quite familiar with the location of your new house. You know exactly how long your commute to work will be and how far away is your kids’ school. You might have done a preliminary research of what the neighbourhood is like in terms of people who live there, noise pollution, and crime rate. Now is time to get even more acquainted with the surroundings. It’s good to know, even before you move in, where are the nearest corner shop, convenience store, drug store. You should be prepared for any kind of emergency in your new area. Also, try to find some places in the neighbourhood where you can have some fun - a dance studio, an arts centre, a gym, cafeterias and restaurants.

And finally, don’t forget that it’s never too early to befriend the neighbours.
